Grade 5/6 Term One Newsletter
Dear Parents,
Welcome back to school, I hope everyone is well rested and ready for another exciting year. This year we have 16 students in our class with 5 grade six children and 11 grade five’s. I would like to welcome two new students to our class James, grade 6, and Claudia, grade 5.
This year we are continuing to use a differentiated approach within the classroom to enable all students to work at their own level. The Literacy block includes Reader’s and Writer’s workshop and weekly Spelling and Grammar sessions. We will also use the ‘Spellodrome’ program this year to further enhance student learning. In Numeracy a range of approaches will be used to suit different learning styles and the children will continue using the ‘Mathletics’ program in school and at home.
Our Integrated Unit this term is called ‘Learning to Learn’ This will involve us looking at how we learn best, our strengths and weaknesses, goals we have set for ourselves and how we can be a leader within the school. We will further develop our knowledge of T.R.I.B.E.S., De Bono’s Six Thinking Hats and the Multiple Intelligences.
We will also continue to have specialists subjects every week. Our class will be having Music with Mrs Kitching on a Wednesday, P.E. with Mr Gower on a Thursday and Library with Mrs Kitching on a Thursday. We will also be having senior Sport on a Friday with all grade 3-6’s and Religious Education. Please make sure your child wears appropriate footwear on P.E. and Sport days and to return their library books on Library days.
Buddies: This week we will begin getting to know the new prep children. All children will be assigned a ‘buddy’ in the next few weeks either on their own or with another child from the class.
Netbooks: More information will be sent home about netbooks shortly detailing important dates, pricing and agreements.
Leadership Roles: This week we will begin the application process for leadership roles within the school. All grade 6 children will be given the opportunity to apply for a leadership role and there will be some opportunity for grade 5 students to also apply for certain roles.
Interschool Sport: Interschool sport starts in a few weeks with the Interschool Swimming Sports. Throughout the year there are a range of sports available for children to participate in. As we are a small school we will generally be entering mixed teams throughout the year which compete in the boys competition section of sports days. These days also require parent support for team management and supervision so if you are able to attend throughout the year that would be greatly appreciated.
Just a reminder about everything we need at school every day. All children need a silent reading book either from home or our school library. If your child has brain food they also need to bring that into the classroom every morning. I would ask that all children bring an artsmock to school as we do some very messy activities in Art.
Thankyou for the great start to the year and I look forward to working with your children this year.
