I’m Laura McKenzie and I teach grade 5/6. This is my eighth year at Mount Macedon Primary School and my fourth in the senior room. The grade 5/6 children take on a lot of responsibility within our school and many have formal leadership roles such as school captain, house captain, fundraising coordinators and junior school councillors.
All grade 5/6 children also have a buddy in prep who they work with once a week and look out for in the yard.
In grade 5/6 the children approach reading through serial reading, shared reading, guided reading and silent reading. We use a process called 'Reader's Workshop' allowing all children to work at their own level. In writing we have implemented a process called 'Writer’s workshop' which allows the children to base their writing around their own ideas and thinking and to further develop their individual spelling strategies.
In Numeracy we focus on the areas of Number, Space, Measurement, Chance and Data, Working Mathematically and Structure. Numeracy is taught using a range of strategies such as whole group, small group and individual tasks and the use of hands on materials.
Each term we focus on a new topic for integrated studies allowing the children to learn and explore a range of curriculum areas and produce a research project.
Grade 5/6 children are also very involved in our interschool sports program competing in a range of events throughout the year.
