Library

My name is Alison Kitching and Library is one of two specialist areas that I teach in the school. I believe that developing a love of reading and books with students is one of the most important things that a teacher can do for a child.

Each class comes to the Library for one hour per week so students can have a chance to borrow a book to read at home, further extend the literacy skills learnt in class and develop a love of literature and reading.  During Term 1 library sessions students develop their knowledge of parts of a book such as front and back covers, blurbs, titles, author and illustrator names, ISBN numbers, contents and index pages and glossaries.  During Terms 2 and 3 the focus shifts to studying about specific authors and students are given the opportunity to write their own book for publication.  Book week is also celebrated in library sessions and students also contribute to the voting collected as part of the YABBA book awards.  The focus for Term 4 is to build the research skills of students through gaining an understanding of how libraries operate and the Dewey system that is used to catalogue and store books in libraries.
